These are the by-laws of the Humanist Association of London and Area (HALA) as amended at a Special General Meeting on October 8, 2009.
1. The organization shall be called the "Humanist Association of London and Area," hereinafter referred to as the Association.
2. The Association members dedicate themselves to promoting the values of Humanism and helping to solve society's problems through the use of rational thought and education.
3. The Association shall be carried on without purpose of gain for its members and any profits or other gains to the organization shall be used in promoting its objectives.
4. The Association will be affiliated with the Humanist Canada.
5. CONDITIONS OF MEMBERSHIP. Membership in the Association shall consist of anyone who agrees with the principles of Humanism, has applied for admission as a member and has paid a membership fee. The membership fees shall be established by the Board of Directors or by a general meeting of members.
6. Any member may withdraw from the Association by delivering to the Secretary of the Association a notice of resignation, or membership terminates when members allow their membership to lapse by not paying their fees.
7. The annual meeting of members shall be the first meeting of January.
8. Board of Directors: The Association shall be managed by a Board of Directors of at least three and no more than seven members.
9. Board of Directors members shall not receive any remuneration for their services.
10. At the annual meeting of members a Board of Directors shall be elected consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary and a Treasurer. A board member can hold more than one position at the same time, but the president and vice-president cannot hold the treasurer position at the same time.
11. The Board of Directors of the Association shall be elected at each annual meeting.
12. The Board of Directors shall set the dates for all meetings. Regular meetings will normally be held on the second Thursday of the months of September to July. Notice of any meeting will normally be given at the previous meeting, and by e-mail or regular mail .
13. Meetings shall normally be conducted by consensus if possible, but if necessary the chair may decide to proceed according to Roberts Rules.
14. AMENDMENT OF BY-LAWS. The by-laws of the Association may be repealed or amended at the annual meeting or at a special meeting of members, notice of the nature of the amendment having been given, at least 15 days before the meeting, with the notice of the meeting.
